Fourth examination attempt

​A student will, as a main rule, have 3 - three - examination attempts in the same course, ref. BI Regulations Section 5-7 (1) letter a.

 Normally, a student has 3 - three - examination attempts.

Rules regarding examinations at BI Norwegian Business School are stated in Regulations relating to Admissions, Studies and Examinations at BI, chapter 5.

An examination attempt is deemed to have taken place even if the candidate does not present him/herself, as long as the candidate was registered for the relevant examination at the end of the de-registration deadline, and has not provided documentation for legitimate absence.

Documentation of legitimate absence must be dated no later than the following working day after the examination and be handed in no later than five - 5 - business days after the examination date.

When undertaking the examination, both Passed and Fail results count as an examination attempt, as well as cases where the student withdraws from the examination.

If the student has not withdrawn from an examination within the given deadline and do not attend the examination, this is also regarded this as an examination attempt.

The candidate is responsible of keeping track of the number of undertaken examination attempts.

Exceptions in special cases

In certain cases, the student may apply for a fourth and final examination attempt, ref Section 5-7 (1) letter b. A substantiated application must be submitted to the study unit for assessment and decision. The application must be submitted within the deadline for examination registration in the semester.

Fourth examination attempt

A candidate will, as a main rule, have three examination attempts in the same course. In particular circumstances, the candidate may apply for a fourth and final attempt at taking the examination.

Rules regarding examinations at BI Norwegian Business School are stated in Regulations relating to Admissions, Studies and Examinations at BI, chapter 5. 

A student has 3 examination attempts in the same course, ref Section 5-7 (1) letter a.

In particular cases the student can apply for a fourth, and final, examination attempt, ref Section 5-7 (1) letter b.

Application requirements for fourth examination attempt

The application must be in writing and substantiated to be considered.

The application must also contain the ID number, name of student, examination code, examination name, and what semesters the examination in question is desired taken.

Applications must be made to the student campus / student administration for consideration and decision. The application must be submitted within the deadline for examination registration in the semester (October 1 or March 1).

 
Please note the following

  • When counting the number of attempts, all of the previous attempts that a candidate has made at the current or corresponding examination will be considered relevant.
    This includes passed and failed examinations and any occasions where the student has failed to unregister for the examination within the deadline.
  • Candidates are responsible for keeping track of the number of attempts they have made at an examination, but can be informed of this from their place of study upon request.
  • Candidates who have passed the current or corresponding examination will not be granted a fourth examination attempt. The rule also applies where there are grade requirements for entry to further studies.

    • Candidates in the Bachelor programme of Auditing, who have grade requirements to get recognition as a registered auditor (BIs Academic Regulations Section 4-2 (2) b) ) can be exempt from this rule.

    • Applications from candidates with a debt to BI Norwegian Business School will not be assessed until this debt has been cleared.

    • For candidates making slow study progression, BI Norwegian Business School may set requirements regarding particular study combinations and/or the order in which courses are taken when approving the application for a fourth examination attempt.

    • If a fourth examination attempt is granted, this is the candidate’s final ecamination attempt. Failure to pass risks the candidate not completing the course and not receiving a final diploma from BI Norwegian Business School.

How many times a candidate may take an examination in any given course are stated in Regulations relating to Admissions, Studies and Examinations at BI, Section 5-4 (1) Examination rights and Section 5-7 (1) and (2)

Re-sit examination.

Candidates who have used up the three allotted examination attempts, may apply for a fourth attempt at the current or corresponding examination. The application should be made to the student’s study centre.

  • well founded

  • written

  • include: ID number, name, examination code, examination atempt and which semester you wish to take the actual examination

  • handed in to your study centre
